Born in Bangor, North Wales, Aled Prichard-Jones lived in Snowdonia until he trained as an architect at Bath University. After initially working in Aberystwyth, he moved to work in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, until taking early retirement in 2000. He and his wife, Mary, returned to Gwynedd where he set up a studio in their new home in Beddgelert, so that he could literally paint the landscape on his doorstep. His strong pastel landscapes include familiar views of the Snowdonia peaks and coastline, wooded valleys and mountain lakes, as well as the more remote, but equally recognisable mountain summits. Pastels are his preferred medium because their immediacy and brilliance are so well suited to portraying the fleeting effect of light and the ever changing mood and atmosphere of the rugged Snowdonia mountain landscapes captured in so many of his paintings.
