CLIVE GOULD
Shortly after studying graphic design at Cardiff College of Art, Clive Gould commenced a highly successful career, over 25 years, with BBC Wales, leading to his final position as Head of Graphic Design.
In 1995 he realised his dream of becoming a fulltime professional artist and sculptor.
Since this time his paintings have predominantly been inspired by his long-held passion for the sea and the magical elements
of the coastline.
The Vale of Glamorgan Heritage coast and the Gower Peninsula were initially the main locations that featured in Clive’s early seascape paintings. Several years ago, he discovered the wonders of the Pembrokeshire coast and its breathtaking views, with the glorious features of golden sands, turquoise seas, rugged cliffs and offshore islands.
Clive’s work is highly realistic - sometimes verging on photorealism - and depicts some of Pembrokeshire’s finest spots, including Marloes Sands, Druidstone, Traeth Llyfn and Abereiddy. His paintings are executed with acrylics and portray outstanding technical skill.
Clive’s paintings are the result of combining many observations over a period of time. “I will visit a particular beach on several occasions, at varying times of the day, tide and different weather conditions. My aim is to capture, on camera, together with sketches and notes, the magical effects of changing light that may occur in a moment of time and to emphasise these elements in my paintings,” says Clive.
“I want the viewer to share visually the magical moments I have experienced on a beach,” he says,“whether it be the dramatic effects of changing light, the crashing of waves or the dynamic sculptured shapes of rocks and pebbles.”
Clive’s work is very much a poetic reminder of the beauty of Pembrokeshire and the power and precision of realism in the hands of a skilled artist. His paintings transcend photographically yet also offer a vivid and faithful reproduction of the area’s most dazzling interplays of seascape, weather and light.
