ELEANOR WHITEMAN
I live and work in Caerphilly and spend much of my spare time in Pembrokeshire, where the draw of the coast provides me with constant inspiration. From summers spent rock pooling as a child, bitterly cold days mapping the rocks as a Geology student, to hours spent walking the cliff path with my camera, my experience of West Wales is always evolving as is my relationship with it.
As an artist I am drawn in particular to where the land meets the sea. The geology of the land and the epic scale of time is exposed here in a unique way and the relationship between land and sea is in constant flux. I have a love of photography and studied at the University of Brighton. Photography has a unique and magical ability to capture a single moment in time and place whereas painting, for me, is more of a 'collective knowing'. Trying to capture a feeling or memory of a place is a mental struggle and reworking/revisiting/remembering and re investigating are all important in making an image which, for me represents my connection to a place. I enjoy using different techniques in my practice including painting, lino and wood cut, etching, mono print and photography.
