RHODRI GELER DAVIES
Rhodri 'Geler' Davies was born in Llanelli in 1961 and after attending Dyfed College of Art in Carmarthen he obtained a degree in Expressive Arts from Rolle College, Exmouth. He then trained as an Art teacher at Birmingham Polytechnic and taught Art in schools in Somerset, London and Perugia eventually becoming Head of Art at Chiswick Community College. He is most well-known for his stylised, dramatic brooding skies atop abandoned or isolated West Wales cottages and farmhouses. Whilst unashamedly influenced by Kyffin Williams, David Barnes and their disciples, Rhodri Davies works solely in acrylics and has only recently returned to paintings of buildings in rural Wales after a period spent painting miniatures of barns and farm outbuildings in Provence and French wine regions. He is known by his middle name 'Geler' which he shares with all the other male members of his family which originally hail from Llangeler in North West Carmarthenshire. Acutely conscious of the changing social fabric and landscape of rural Wales and especially Carmarthenshire, Rhodri Davies takes most of his current inspiration from estate agents' adverts and auction notices of farm closures and the sales of abandoned rural cottages – he attempts to highlight the ubiquitous charm of buildings in rural areas affected by social decline and vanishing infrastructure.
