STEPHEN KITE
I am an Emeritus Professor of the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, an FRSA, a member of the Society of Artists in Architecture, and a Companion of the John Ruskin charity, The Guild of St George.
In my drawing and painting I seek a resonance between my experiences of architectural practice, design-studio teaching, and research into the history and theory of architecture, in exploring the poetics of architecture in its urban and landscape settings. Aspects of these investigations are evident in my most recent book: Shadow-Makers: A Cultural History of Shadows in Architecture, Bloomsbury, 2017; I have also written extensively on the inspiring ideas and works of John Ruskin and Adrian Stokes.
The support for my images is always paper, I work predominantly in watercolour (or watercolour and ink) on white, or tinted sheets – and occasionally in pastel. I especially admire those watercolour traditions of Britain and the USA (historical and contemporary) which respect the glowing, transparent qualities of the watercolour medium on a basis of penetrating draughtsmanship.
I have lived and worked in Ireland, the Middle East, London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and latterly Cardiff, and my work draws on a continuity of field-sketching in Europe, the Middle East, North America, Australasia etc. I have exhibited widely: with the Society of Architect Artists (now reborn as the SocAA), in various galleries in London, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and in Wales.
